The Medieval and Postmedieval Archaeology Research Group of the University of the Basque Country organizes an International Conference that will be held from 20 to 21 November, 2008 in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain).
This topic is a fundamental one in the European archaeological research due to the great significance that these studies have when developing protection policies of the cultural heritage, as well as its involvements in the creation of social and local identities. The work done in recent years in different European locations has shown that most of the current cities and villages have been founded during the Early Middle Ages, being this period, thus, witness of the origins of our present landscape.
The aim of this conference is to take a critical stock of the last ten years of researches around the Archaeology of Villages in south Europe, as it is a main subject for understanding the Early Middle Ages and the protection of the archaeological heritage. This event also intends to make a comparative analysis with other experiences carried out in north Europe, as we count with the best specialists at this level. Finally, the conference will submit the results of the multi-annual works that are currently being managed in some villages of the Basque Country, such us Zornoztegi, Aistra, Zaballa, Gasteiz, Treviño, Gorliz, Arcaya or Zarautz.
